The great thing about working with startups is that the learning curve is continual. Every day I come away with something new, and every time I meet a founder I think “there’s still so much more to learn.” That’s the most fascinating part.

I’ve seen a few cycles over the last 10 years, and I’ve been privileged to see companies grow from an idea into a large company that dominates their category. It’s incredibly exciting to be part of that journey and witness all the highs, lows, mistakes and wins. I feel fortunate to be privy to this wealth of experience.

The thing that gets me most excited about a founder’s pitch is their articulation of their vision, desire to take on incumbents, and their appetite to solve really big problems. Founders who are obsessed to reboot the Indian dream. I seek the magical combination of courage and genius.

When I was growing up, my family moved to a new city every two or three years. My father worked for a government bank and we lived all over the country. My sister and I were constantly being thrown into the deep end. We had to adjust to a new city, a new home, a new school, and build new friendships every couple of years. My parents raised us with an independent mindset and encouraged us to embrace difference and all sorts of challenges with equal rigour. This made me really resilient; I learned early on how to appreciate change and thrive in uncertainty.

I like to come to work with a learning mindset. What attracts me to this job is intellectual stimulation, the people I work with, deep friendships built through the many roller coaster rides, and the thrill of building companies.

Prior to joining Sequoia India, I was in Germany with Deutsche Bank. I returned to India in 2007 because I feel very passionate about the country. I’m incredibly optimistic about India’s prospects. So many things are changing, so quickly, and it really feels like ‘now is our time’.

Talent is everything, and I always encourage founders I work with to hire well. I’m a big believer in the idea that you’re only as good as the people around you. I admire founders who empower people. If you put good people into very difficult situations, they’ll find a solution.

Motherhood was my defining moment. It’s the trampoline I jump on to experience my daily dose of joy, purpose, and light. I encourage my toddler son to stay curious because when curiosity is alive, we discover many worlds.
